PIAFS Rate Adaptation

PHS (Personal Hand Sets) Internet Access Forum Specification (PIAFS) is an Internet standard that defines a form of rate adaptation used for handling dial-in connections between hand-held wireless devices (PHS) or Terminal Adapters (TAs) and a Shiva® device. PIAFS is used primarily in Japan.

Note: The firmware that supports PIAFS is located in both the LanRover™ Access Switch and the Shiva® wide area network cards. Xircom* PRI cards do not support PIAFS.

The LanRover Access Switch identifies PIAFS calls by one of the following methods:

  • From the bearer capabilities in the call setup. The LanRover Access Switch can detect that the call is a PIAFS call.
  • From the called number (forced method). This method requires that a phone group is configured for PIAFS only. The forced method ignores the bearer capability, and treats all incoming calls made to the configured call number as PIAFS.
